Ghana coach Otto Addo has hinted at adopting a different system against the Central African Republic (CAR) following the Black Stars’ crucial 2-1 victory over Mali in Bamako on Thursday.
Ghana will face CAR on Monday in Kumasi, buoyed by their impressive second-half performance that secured the win against Mali.
The hosts had taken the lead on the stroke of halftime through a freak goal from Kamory Doumbia, whose shot rebounded off a defender and then back in off the Eagles forward.
However, Ernest Nuamah’s strong back-post header brought Ghana back into the contest just before the hour mark, and Jordan Ayew’s late strike sparked wild celebrations as the Black Stars leapfrogged Mali and moved level with Group I leaders Comoros.
Otto Addo employed a three-back system with two attacking full-backs, two central midfielders, and three forwards led by Antoine Semenyo in the match against Mali. Despite this success, Addo suggested that a different approach might be necessary for the upcoming game against CAR.
“Every game has different demands. For this game, I chose this system but in the next game, maybe I will choose something else—I don’t know yet. So, we will look firmly to see what we can do against the Central African Republic,” Addo said during the post-match press conference in Bamako.
“To be honest, it’s going to be tougher because now everybody expects us to win and it’s going to be difficult just like today. These games are on the edge. If you see all the games, they are all on the edge. Central African Republic picked a draw against Mali, so we have to expect a very, very strong team against us.”
CAR on Wednesday secured a 1-0 victory against Chad and will be aiming for an upset in Kumasi. Addo acknowledged the challenge ahead and the necessity for strategic flexibility.
