President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is expected to deliver the State of the Nation Address (SONA) in Parliament later this morning Wednesday, March 8, 2023.
Article 67 of the 1992 Constitution imposes an obligation on Members of Parliament (MPs), the Speaker, and the Judiciary to receive the President’s Message on the State of the Nation.
The address is expected to highlight the government’s key policy objectives for the coming year as well as provide information on how the government intends to address economic conditions.
The Deputy Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, announced on Friday on the floor of the House when he presented the Business Statement for the fifth week ending Friday, March 10.
He urged MPs to be punctual and seated in the Chamber latest by 9.15 a.m. for the SONA and advised them not to enter the Chamber with their guests.
He said a motion to thank the President for the Message on the State of the Nation would be moved on Thursday, March 9, and the debate would last for six days; Thursday, March 9, to Friday, March 17.
The State of the Nation Address was originally scheduled for February but was later postponed.
The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, explained why the meeting was rescheduled.
“After extensive discussions, the address has been shifted to the 8th of March. It is for good reason that the President agreed to the date.”
“The 6th is an important date for all of us and there will be a national event in Ho and the President is expected to be there. On the 7th also, definitely, for good reason, it cannot be held. So, we have agreed to sacrifice some assignments and do the SONA on 8th,” the Speaker noted.
