Ghanaian poet and literary coach, Nana Asaase has made a lot from poetry an would beg to differ to such views that seek to suggest poetry doesn’t pay
In an interview with Joy FM’s Kwame Dadzie on ‘Joy Entertainment Unpacked.’ Nana Asaase whose real name is Philip Boakye Dua Oyinka is a veteran who has been into poetry in a little over a decade and insists poetry has paid him well and doesn’t regret the decision sacrifice his job at the time so he could fully focus on his craft as a poet “This is my eleventh year since I quit my job. Poetry has been my biggest payer. On stage, off stage, whichever way it is, it’s been poetry all along,”
On the question of the possibility of making Poetry a full time job for Poets, Nana Asaase opined “it is possible to take poetry as a full-time job although it might not be like the kind of turn-overs we are expecting when someone is in a regular 8 to 5 job making a lot of money.”
Adding it was a profession that is on the rise “Consistently, it’s growing. It will get better. It can be done. It has been done. We are doing it. Maybe without knowing it, everybody is doing it,” he added.
His statement comes on the back of another poet renowned Chief Moomen insisting it wasn’t prudent for anyone to take Poetry as a full-time job as according to his ‘experience’, it doesn’t guarantee enough returns to make a living out of “Can you practice as a poet, as a career full-time, and that is what you do, that is what you survive on completely until your retirement? From my experience, I don’t think so and I don’t necessarily think it should be so”
