The managing director of InterCity State Transport Corporation (STC), Nana Akomea has said his outfit has initiated moves to procure electric buses from Ghanaian startup, SolarTaxi through its partners.

Other state-owned transport companies such as the Metro Mass Transit Company Ltd and Aayalolo are also expected to be supplied electric buses through a similar arrangement.

The Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia gave the hint after touring the SolarTaxi facility in Accra.

Speaking on Accra-based Metro TV on Friday (29 September), Akomea said STC will establish charging terminals for the electric buses across its branches in Ghana.

“We are about to renew the bus fleet, but there is a movement away from gasoline to electric,” he said.

“Just this week the Vice President, STC, Metro Mass and Aayalolo met a Ghanaian start-up company called SolarTaxi who are assembling scooters, and they also have a partnership with their foreign partners who are into electric buses, and we are going to have an arrangement where they will supply all of us with electric buses.”

“STC spends about GHC4 million on fuel every month. There is no point going for another 100 diesel buses, we have to move and that has delayed it a bit. The cost of electricity in terms of changing will be cost effective,”Akomea said.
