The Head of Public Health Department at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Florence Kuukyi has urged individuals and entities that produce food for public consumption to ensure that their staff were medically screened and issued with medical health certificate cards to ensure food and public safety.
She made this statement on Wednesday when she led a team from her outfit to embark on an inspection and enforcement exercise in the Ablekuma South-Sub Metropolitan District.
The exercise which is being done in collaboration with the Multimedia Group (Joy Fm, Joy News) under the tagline, “Clean Ghana Campaign” saw the team visiting a kenkey production house, a corn mill and a public toilet among others.
“People who operate corn mill machines and produce food should have a medical certificate. This ensures food safety and shows that you are clean to produce the food we eat,” she said.
During the exercise, the team locked up a corn mill shop on the Ansah Nunoo Street in Korle Gonno for breaching provisions in the Public Health Act, 2012 (851) and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly’s byelaws 2017.
She expressed her dissatisfaction with the use of unhygienic production tools, naked wires exposed at the premises, dirty floor for operations and also the staff not having medical certificates to handle food.
The team also visited a kenkey production house in Korle Gonno, where a notice was served on them to provide a toilet facility in their house in one month.
“Aside from not having a toilet facility in the house, the kenkey production house is not clean and they are operating under unhygienic conditions,” she said.
At Ojoo Public toilet in Chorkor, the operator was also served a 24 hours’ notice to ensure cleanliness in his premises and also to desist from the sale of cigarettes and newspapers as anal cleaning materials.
The AMA/ Joy Clean Ghana Campaign which kicked off in September 2019, is an initiative that seeks to help enforce waste management laws and educate the general public on how to manage waste. The campaign is intended to educate citizens and make them take responsibility for their actions.
