KATH refers patients to private labs as GAMLS strikes

Management of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has resorted to private laboratory scientists to step in and fill the absence created by the strike of public laboratory scientists.

Over 100 laboratory scientists at KATH have laid down their tools as they embark on a sit-down strike to drive home their pleas.

Lab workers at KATH on Thursday, May 20 began the action to kick against the posting of two physicians to the Hematology Unit.

The strike is part of series of actions to be taken to resist the move if the two officers remain at the Unit.

This could lead to piled up samples at the laboratory unit of KATH.

To this end, KATH’s management says the situation has forced them to refer patients to access laboratory services from near-by private labs to ensure critical situations are attended to.

Speaking on Akoma FM‘s current affairs and political show GhanAkoma on Thursday, May 20, Public Relations Director for KATH, Kwame Frimpong told host Aduanaba Kofi Asante Ennin that;

“Because of the strike lab professionals have embarked upon, we will have to rely on the individual and private laboratories to assist in all lab services for the interim”.

He further explained that this is not the first time lab scientists have embarked on such industrial strike.

“During those days the private labs stepped in and took up all outstanding lab services so this is what we will be doing as management continues to take them through,” he said.
