Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has received congratulations from Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari for winning the general election last Saturday.
Mr Tinubu, who will succeed Mr Buhari as the 16th president of Africa’s most populous country, was declared winner of the elections on Wednesday, March 1.
Standing on the ticket of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the former Lagos Governor polled 8,794,726 votes to beat his closest rivals Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP).
Taking to Twitter on Wednesday morning, President Buhari indicated that his successor is the “best person for the job”.
“I shall now work with him and his team to ensure an orderly handover of power.”

He added that the 2023 election has demonstrated the continued relevance of democracy “and capability to deliver for the people it serves”.
In the presidential elections, States in all regions across Nigeria changed colour. Some amongst you may have noticed my home State among them. The winning candidate did not carry his own home State either. That happens during a competitive election.

Votes and those that cast them cannot be taken for granted. Each must be earned. Competition is good for our democracy. There is no doubt the people’s decision has been rendered in the results we look at today.
