The Member of Parliament-elect for Fomena, Mr. Andrew Asiamah, has stated that he is joining the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 8th Parliament in January 2021.
The MP was asked to vacate his seat in the 7th Parliament after the NPP wrote to the Speaker to that effect, after he decided to go independent in the recently-held general elections, following what he described as the unfair treatment meted out to him by the party (NPP) during its primaries.
He contested the Fomena seat as an independent candidate despite the backlash from the party, including President Akufo-Addo but he won the just-ended polls on December 7.
Following his re-election, he has become the toast of social media and crowned a ‘kingmaker’ since the two biggest political parties, the NPP and the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) have virtually split the 275 seats.
While the NPP won 137 seats, the NDC won 136 with the Sene West seat being the only one outstanding currently due to a legal challenge.
But speaking to the parliamentary press corps on Wednesday, December 16, 2020, the Fomena MP-elect said he has already made the decision to go back to the NPP.
Mr Asiamah said: “I’ve won for the party, I stood for a principle and that principle has been exhibited and that’s all I stood for. I’ve won for the party and I’m going to the party and I hope the party will welcome me and my followers.”
He stated that almost everybody in the NPP has congratulated him for his electoral victory.
“Almost everybody in the party has congratulated me but whether I’ve been congratulated or not, I belong to the family and I’ll go back to the family and I’ll sit with the family in the 8th Parliament. I made that declaration earlier before the elections. I’ve no place to go”.
Mr. Asiamah also rubbished claims that he made demands to the government before agreeing to join the NPP in Parliament.
“I haven’t made any demands. I’m with my family and any issue of any demand is outside the domain,” he stated.
