SIM card re-registration: NCA hints of possible deadline extension

The National Communications Authority (NCA) has said it is not ruling out the possibility of a deadline extension as it hopes to get every SIM card re-registered.

There have been calls for an extension of the March 2022 deadline as reports of subscriber challenges increase.

Speaking to Asaase News, head of Consumer and Corporate Affairs at the NCA, Nana Dufie Badu stated that there will be an opportunity for everyone to register their SIM cards.

“I would like to reassure subscribers and the general public that there’ll be the opportunity for everybody to register their SIM. The NCA and the ministry of communications have been continuously monitoring the exercise and it is the hope of the ministry and the NCA that every SIM user will be able to register their SIM.”

“In this regard, if there’s a need for an extension, the Communications Ministry and the NCA will sit down and take the first step,” she stated.

Meanwhile, the Mobile Network Operators (MNOs); MTN, AirtelTigo, Glo and Vodafone said they are working to reduce and eliminate the long queues at their offices.

A joint communique issued by the telecommunication companies and the NCA, said, “all MNOs will work to improve the customer experience at various registration centres to reduce and eliminate long queues at stage 2 of registration.”

“The MNOs will take urgent steps to increase the number of agents/staff undertaking the biometric capture at stage 2 of the exercise, open up additional registration points and increase the number of devices for the biometric capture.”
