Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, the newly sworn-in Speaker of the 8th Parliament of the 4th Republic, has pledged to serve all Ghanaians faithfully.
In his acceptance speech, after he had been sworn-in by the Chief Justice Kwasi Anin Yeboah as the new Speaker of Parliament on Thursday, January 7, 2021, at the Parliament House in Accra, Bagbin said he will bring to the fore the huge bank of experience he has gathered over the years as a parliamentarian in the discharge of his new duties as the speaker of Parliament.
Bagbin after the elections polled 138 votes out of the 275 votes cast by Members of Parliament elected on the floor of Parliament.
He emerged victorious over his opponent, Professor Mike Oquaye who was the Speaker of Parliament of the previous 7th Parliament who polled 136 votes with one legislator failing to vote.
Meanwhile, the Tema West MP, Carlos Ahenkorah snatched uncounted ballot papers during the election of Speaker of Parliament.
However, some legislators chased him and fortunately grabbed him which turned the parliament to be chaotic.
Bagbin is currently the longest-serving member of parliament, having served since 1993 when the first parliament under the 4th Republic was inaugurated.
