Time to put a stop to bullying in SHS – Education Minister

Bullying in schools, according to Minister of Education Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, is thing of the past and  has no place  in the  new Ghanaian educational system.

He condemned the bullying of freshers by second- and third-year students at some senior high schools, practice known as “homoing”.

Such acts of indiscipline, according to Dr. Adutwum, should not be condoned in the 21st century. Rather, he  believes that schools should strive to create the ideal learning atmosphere, one that is free of intimidation, in  order for pupils to succeed academically.
According to the minister, such activities have resulted in the decapitation of students. He mentioned the case of a student who died on November 5, as result of an alleged bullying incident at Konongo Odumase Senior  High School.
Dr. Adutwum expressed concern that various forms of bullying have long been part of Ghanaian school culture, but said that “the moment has come for us to put stop to this, because homoing is thing of the past.”
